The Legislation:

The American middle class benefits from immigrants' economic contributions as workers, entrepreneurs, taxpayers and consumers. But the fact that undocumented immigrants can be so easily exploited in the workplace puts downward pressure on wages and working conditions for all workers, making it harder to achieve and hold onto a middle-class standard of living. For this reason, the middle class would benefit from a policy that enabled undocumented immigrants to earn legal status and have full rights in the workplace. Yet this bill would do just the opposite: it is a costly and unworkable crackdown on undocumented immigrants that would ultimately serve to drive them further underground, increasing exploitation. The bill mandates an expansion of the flawed electronic employment verification system so that every employee in the country – both immigrants and U.S. citizens – would be required to have their work authorization verified whenever they apply for a new job. The legislation also involves the Social Security Administration in immigration enforcement, increases local police participation in immigration enforcement and pours still more taxpayer money into a failed strategy of increasing border enforcement.
